“I observe the world, nothing more. And in doing so, I carry the universe in my pocket.” — Fernando Pessoa
Have you ever heard of the “20-Minute Park Effect”?
Research shows that simply spending 20 minutes in nature can significantly reduce stress, regulate emotions, and help us reconnect with a sense of inner calm.
In our daily commute, we pass rows of towering buildings. Seated behind the wheel, windows closed, we block out the noise of the city—and with it, the cicadas singing just beyond the glass. In an age where humanity can explore outer space, we seem to be moving closer to the sky, yet drifting further away from the ground beneath our feet.
Let us not forget that nature is a gift from the universe. Tall trees always grow toward the light, not by chance, but because they are deeply rooted in the earth.
Awakening Through the Lenses: Mindfulness in Nature
Hosted by the International Psychology Association of Canada (IPAC) and jointly funded by Canada Service Corps (CSCC), the Canada China Federation of Entrepreneurs, and Celebrate Markham – Cultural Events, the public mental wellbeing workshop “Awakening Through the Lens: A Mindfulness Journey in Nature” is officially launched.
What is this?
This is a public light mental wellbeing workshop that combines mindfulness practices with film photography. Through a gentle and supportive approach, the program aims to help more people deepen their understanding of mental health and emotional awareness.
Designed and facilitated by Ontario-registered social workers and mental health professionals, the workshop integrates mindfulness-based practices from psychology with arts-based therapeutic approaches.
Through guided mindful walking in natural trails, a “slow photography” experience using disposable film cameras, and reflective photo-sharing conversations, participants are invited to cultivate awareness—observing nature while sensing the flow of their emotions. Captured images become a medium for expression, inner exploration, and emotional dialogue.
We hope to offer every participant a gentle and safe space—one where you can reconnect with your emotions and engage in meaningful reflection through nature.
We believe that when you hold a film camera, each photograph is an intentional act of observation and choice. Every moment framed through the viewfinder and every press of the shutter represents a conscious process of seeing, feeling, and expressing.
What Participants Will Take Away?
An opportunity to slow down and build a deeper connection with nature
A safe and supportive space to express yourself and feel genuinely heard
Each participant will use a disposable film camera provided by the program (cameras will be collected by the organizer for developing after the session)
Developed film photographs — tangible traces of your mindful experience in nature and a visual dialogue with yourself
Who Is This Program For?
Interested in mental wellbeing and emotional exploration
Willing to engage with the program in an open, genuine, and respectful manner
Committed to non-judgment toward oneself and others
Able to commit to both sessions, arriving on time and staying for the full duration
Comfortable completing the full outdoor trail walk, with an activity level equivalent to approximately two hours of light physical activity
No photography experience required—just curiosity and a willingness to observe and reflect
Program Structure : Two Immersive Sessions
Session One: Mindful Walking & Nature-Based Healing
Guided by a mental health professional, participants will cultivate awareness in nature and use the camera to capture moments of connection with the world around them. Film photography invites us to slow down and return to the present moment, allowing us to sense emotions as we press the shutter.
Session Two: Reflective Roundtable & Group Sharing
After the photographs are developed, participants will gather again in a safe and welcoming small-group setting. Through collage-making and open expression, the group will explore themes such as emotional awareness, a sense of safety, and belonging, in a professionally facilitated roundtable conversation.
Event Recaps
On July 31, 2025, the first session of “Awakening Through the Lens: A Mindfulness Journey in Nature” successfully concluded. The experience was filled with moments of exploration and awareness, as well as meaningful sharing and resonance among participants.
